AWA co-sponsors family day at Sacred Heart Catholic Church

The American Women’s Association was a co-sponsor for Sacred Heart Catholic Church’s Annual Family Day, held on February 5th. On the occasion, AWA President, Diana Raia, presented a check for 500 bd to Rev. Fr. Freddy D’Souza. AWA representatives were honored to receive a Memento of Appreciation during the event.
The mega event featured cultural programs presented by the international community, in addition to food stalls serving cuisines from around the world, fancy stalls, game stalls, and a variety of entertainment. Funds raised during this event will be used to support Sacred Heart’s community outreach programs.

Sacred Heart Catholic Church has a rich and longstanding history within the Bahrain community. With support from the Emir of Bahrain, Sheikh Hamad Bin Isa Al Khalifa, the foundation stone for the church was laid on June 9, 1939. In just six months, the church, the priests’ residence, and the Sacred Heart School, were built. The church was formally consecrated on March 3, 1940. The parish was the first Catholic Church in the Arabian Gulf. In 1990, the parish underwent major expansion, with the construction of the main church building. Since that time, other major developments include the building of the parish community center and the Third Millennium building.

Sacred Heart Church serves an estimated 140,000 people, under the current guidance of the Parish Priest, Rev.Fr.Freddy D’sousa, OFM Cap. Services are held in 12 different languages.
